Kate McIntosh in All Natural
Kate McIntosh is a New Zealand-born artist working in theatre, performance and video, now based in Brussels. Originally trained in dance, she has been performing internationally since 1995, working, amongst others, with Wendy Houstoun (UK), Australian Dance Theatre and performance maker Tim Etchells (UK), whose work was seen at Southbank Centre in 2009 as part of SPILL Festival.
She presents her piece All Natural on Thursday 4 March in the Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
What do you fear the most?
Apathy, violence.
Which mobile number do you call the most?
Someone who’ll be friendly.
What – or where – is perfection?
I don’t know if I made this up or heard it somewhere, but “perfection is the devil” comes to mind. As a concept perfection seems fairly suspect to me.
Who is your favourite hero from fiction – and why?
Favourite is hard to pick… Animal from the Muppets attracted me when I was a kid. Untamed energy, inarticulate, loves his job.
What’s your favourite ritual?
I’m guessing a ritual is an action that you truly believe will bring you into alignment with the universe – I can’t say I have anything like that for now… sounds enjoyable though.
Which living person do you most admire (and why)?
I have a lot of admiration for people with humour, tenacity, clarity…
What other talent or skill would you like to possess?
Writing well.
What’s your favourite website?
I don’t have TV, so I’ve been watching film trailers to get a flashing picture fix…
If you could programme your ideal Southbank Centre show, which artists (living or dead) would you bring together?
I’d like to know what’s happening onstage 97 years from now.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Enjoy not knowing
What is the most played piece of music on your MP3 player or in your CD collection?
According to my iTunes, it’s a local band from Brussels – Cafeneon
Tell us about a special memory you have of Southbank Centre.
I remember very well the photographs taken on the moon that were shown at the Hayward Gallery some years back…
